Things to Do in Stobi

Stobi contains some of the Balkans' best Roman mosaics—yet you might be the only tourist there. This ancient city sat at the crossroads between Rome and Constantinople, flourishing from the 2nd century BC through the 6th century AD before fading into obscurity. Located near Gradsko, about 100 kilometers south of Skopje, the site offers complete Roman baths, early Christian basilicas, and elaborate mosaic floors that rival anything in the Mediterranean. What makes Stobi special is simple. You can wander through ruins that would draw massive crowds elsewhere and find yourself practically alone among stones that haven't changed in 1,500 years.

Dining options at Stobi consist of one small café near the entrance serving basic snacks and drinks. The nearby town of Gradsko offers several traditional Macedonian restaurants where you can try tavče gravče (baked beans) and ajvar. Pack a picnic instead. The site has designated eating areas within the archaeological park, and you won't waste time hunting for mediocre food. For substantial meals, drive 30 minutes to Veles, which has several restaurants specializing in fresh river fish from the Vardar River.

Visit between May and October. Late spring through early fall provides the most pleasant weather for walking the exposed site, though summer midday temperatures can be brutal. Early morning visits (site opens at 8 AM) offer cooler temperatures and golden light perfect for photography. Late afternoon visits create dramatic shadows across the ruins. Winter visits are possible and have stark beauty, but some remote areas might be less accessible. The Roman theatre hosts classical concerts and performances during summer festival season (July-August)—ancient venues come alive again.
