A solid week gives you time for Skopje (2 days), Ohrid and its lakefront (2-3 days), and the Matka Canyon or wine region around Tikveš (1-2 days). Add a day trip to Bitola or the monastery at Saint Naum if you're based in Ohrid. Most visitors rent a car for flexibility. Distances are short, Skopje to Ohrid is about 175 km and takes roughly 2.5 hours.

With three days, focus on either Skopje and Matka Canyon (1.5 days) plus Ohrid (1.5 days), or stay entirely in Ohrid and use day trips to Saint Naum Monastery and the Bay of Bones museum. Skopje to Ohrid takes about 3 hours by car or bus, so the travel day cuts into sightseeing time. If you're flying in and out of Skopje, the Ohrid option requires backtracking unless you book a one-way car rental.

Three days gives you a good introduction to either Skopje and its surroundings or the Ohrid region. But not both comfortably. You'll see the main highlights but miss secondary spots like Bitola, Stobi archaeological site, or the wineries around Tikveš. If you can extend to 5-7 days, you'll leave with a much fuller picture of the country.

Ohrid works best for a single-base trip, you're on the lake, and day trips to Saint Naum, Bitola, and even Albania's Drilon Springs are all within an hour. Skopje is better if you want urban energy, easier international connections, and quick access to Matka Canyon and Kosovo. Splitting your stay between the two covers the most ground without constant packing.

Budget travelers can manage on €30-40/day with hostel beds (€10-15), street food or tavern meals (€4-8), and local buses. Mid-range trips run €60-80/day with private rooms, sit-down restaurant meals, and a rental car (from €25/day). Skopje and Ohrid are slightly pricier than smaller towns. But even there a good dinner with wine rarely tops €15 per person.

A car gives you the most freedom, for reaching monasteries, wineries, and smaller villages that buses skip. Skopje to Ohrid is well-served by buses (hourly, about €10), but exploring Matka Canyon, Tikveš, or the back roads around Mavrovo National Park is much easier with your own wheels. Rental rates start around €25/day, and roads are generally in decent shape.

Bitola has Ottoman-era architecture and the ancient Heraclea Lyncestis ruins on its outskirts. Matka Canyon, 30 minutes from Skopje, offers kayaking and cave visits. The Tikveš wine region near Kavadarci produces the country's best reds, several wineries offer tastings. Saint Naum Monastery, on Ohrid's southern shore, sits above springs so clear you can see fish from the boardwalks.

May, June, and September offer warm weather (20-28°C) without the July-August crowds at Lake Ohrid. Winter (December-February) is cold in Skopje (often below freezing) but brings skiers to Mavrovo. Spring wildflowers in Pelister National Park peak in late April and early May. July and August are the busiest and hottest, around the lake.
